People are going to hate me.
No, not because I'm a cocky, sarcastic, and assuming jerk most of the time...although I wouldn't hold it against you if that was the reason.
But no. Despite these facts, the reason people are probably going to hate me is because I've finally done it.
I....Robb Valentyn....kind of respect Rex Ryan.
I know how bad it sounds but hear me out because if I, a green and gold blooded packer fan, can like this guy I think you can too. Let me explain...
Rex Ryan. He's fat. He's loud. He's outspoken. Hell lets be honest...the guy is kind of a dick. However, with all this in mind, how can you sit there and say that you wouldn't want him as your coach or the coach of a team that you're a fan of?
What spawned this entry was a 30 second interview with New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez. He was joking about how he was "benched" last week in favor of Mark Brunell (obviously not the case as the Jets were simply saving him for their playoff run) and somewhere in that interview the ESPN analyst made a comment about how Sanchez had been on a fining system since November for his sometimes poor body language.
The reason for these fines is because Rex Ryan feels that positive body language is something a leader should have at all times whether his team is winning or being held to 0 points against who?...oh, silly me. The Green Bay Packers of course!
So since November, Sanchez had been getting fined in practice, in games, in team meetings, probably in the shower, on the toilet, and given Ryan's dedication, I wouldn't be surprised if he was fining Sanchez for poor posture during the intimate times. (you laugh but if your "alleged" ex-girlfriend looked like this you had better have nothing short of perfect posture.)
But I digress. My point here is that to my knowledge, there has never been a coach so dedicated to the leader of his team showing poise at all times than Rex Ryan. The guy understands what a leader should look and act like, and he himself is a shining example of this. As annoying as it was to hear Ryan explain at the end of the 2009-2010 season that Darrelle Revis should have been the Defensive Player of the Year based solely on his interceptions (completely illogical...much love C-Wood), it's a clear example of Ryan speaking his mind and not being afraid to defend/promote his own team. All too often these days coaches are way too neutral when it comes to times where they feel their team has been wronged. "Oh well that decision isn't mine to make...so and so is a great player and a great asset to our team and individual awards are nice but we're a team...the team comes first and he's a team first guy so I'm sure it doesn't bother him at all...bla bla bla bla blaaaa!"
It's almost more obnoxious in my mind when a coach reads the same script everytime they're asked a question, and it's no secret that Rex Ryan is one of the most unscripted personalities not only in the NFL, but professional sports in general.
Which brings us to the word of the day...PERSONALITY!
Coach Ryan, as opposed to most coaches, ACTUALLY HAS A PERSONALITY! He isn't a robot. He doesn't censor himself to keep his job because he knows that he's a good coach. His owner knows that he's a good coach. His players know that he's a good coach. So really, the guy can pretty much speak his mind with no fear for his job as long as he keeps winning. Do you realize how many coaches are in the same situation yet they sit there and play that oh so entertaining game where they give the media one of these..."no comment"....or "I don't have an opinion on the matter"....or "I wear a cut off sweatshirt to every single game and look like a college kid headed to class before 11 AM, and this is acceptable despite the fact that Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio isn't allowed to wear a suit and tie because it isn't sponsored by reebok." (All of these are actual quotes from Big Bad Billy B...look them up.)
I don't like Bill Belichick.
My point...Rex Ryan has a personality....coaches a winning team...isn't afraid to speak his mind...demands that his players demonstrate leadership at all times...and despite looking the way he does, has a semi-attractive wife. Who wouldn't want that on their sidelines??? (Rex..not his wife)
